Menn secgaþ ġewunelīċe þæt hit nā gōd ne biþ for menn plūman mid his hlāforde tō etenne, nā tō wācum folce hit nā gōd ne biþ tō dǣlenne and tō mǣnsumienne mid him þe rīċe and þrymliċ is, forþām Æsope swilċe tale sæġþ. Cū eode and gǣt and sceape on ǣr huntunge and wāðe mid lēon and heortan onfengon. And þā hīe tō dǣlenne becōmon, þā sæġde se lēo him, "Lā mīn eorlas iċ mōte ēowiċ witen, þæt þæt forma part mīn is, forþām iċ þin hlāford eom, þæt ōðer, forþām iċ strangra eom þe ġē bēoþ, þæt þridda, forþām iċ cāfra rann þē ġē dydon. And swā hwā swā on þǣm feorðan parte tace, swā sceall hē min dēaþliċne fāh weorðan. And þūs oneode hē for his selfe ǣnliċum þā heorhtan.
And þonne tǣċe þās tale eallum folke þæt þā wācan ne sceoldon mid þǣm þrymliċ mennum mǣnsumian ; For þrymliċ mann niþ nā fǣle tō wācum.
