Tīde wæs hund þone of ēowe brēades hlāf manode þone hit æt him hæfde āborgod. And sēo ēowu andswarode þæt hēo nā his nāht næfde. Se hund dyde ēowe beforan Dēman tō cumenne. And forþām sēo ēowu sēo gafol wiþsōc, swā forwohrte hund and mid him lēasġewitan brōhte, þā tō witte wulf, slīw, spearhafoc wǣron. And þonne þās ġewitan āmered and ġehīerded wǣron, þonne sæġde se wulf tō Dēman, "Iċ eom ġewiss and iċ wel ġemune, þæt se hund tō hire brēades hlāf ġeborgode." And se slīw dyde and sæġde, "Hēo āfeng hlāf beforan min selfe." And se spearhafoc sæġde þǣre ēowe, "Uton hiðer for hwȳ manast þū þæt þe þū hæfst ġefangen and āfangen?" And þus wæs sēo earmliċ ēowu oferwunnen. And þonne se Dēma hēt hīe þæt hēo þone hund sceolde, forþām hēo āsealde ǣr þone winter hire flīes and wulle for þǣm þe hēo nā ne hæfde tō ābycgenne. And þus wæs sēo earmliċ ēowu onrēafod.

And hwīltīde cōm cȳta on him, and heora bēgen mid him bær.

Þā tale ġefremmede Æsope for ġelīċnesse þe tō maniġum folcum fremunge is ; For se þe yfel wiþ gōde þenċe, swā sceall þæt yfel þæt hē þenċþ on his selfe þus feallan.

 Swā Cocc tīde his lǣswe on dunghylle sōhte, swā onfand hē earcnanstān, hwǣm se Cocc seġd, "Lā þū eart fæġerne dēorne stān hēr on fūle. And ġif hē þone þē þyrstþ þeċ onfindan sceolde, swā swā iċ dyde, þā sceolde hē þeċ ūp fōn and þeċ on þīn forman stede sette. Ac on oll hæfþ iċ þeċ onfand, for nā þinge hæbbe iċ mid þē tō dōnne, nā gōdnes iċ þē mæġ dōn, nā þū tō mē."


And þis tale seġde Æsope him þǣm þisne boċ rǣden ; for be þȳ cocce onġiete hē þone sott þone nā ġlēawnesse nā wīsdōme ne rǣċeþ, swā swā se Cocc be þȳ earcnanstāne ne rǣċeþ and ne seteþ. And be þȳ stāne is hē þisne fæġerne frofreliċne bōc tō onġietenne.

Swā sægde Æsope ūs ġē scyldlēasa ġē scrēawena on swilċum tale. Hū wæs hit swā þæt ġē lamb ġē wulf þurst hæfdon, and bēgen eodon tō ēa tō drincenne. Swā wearþ hit þæt se wulf būfan dranc and þæt lamb nēoðan dranc. And swā se wulf þæt lamb sēah and wāt, swā sæġde hē him mid hēahum hlēoðore, "Lā þēof for hwȳ hæfþ þū mīn wæter befȳlded and ġestyrded, þe iċ nū sceal drincan?" "Ēalā min hlāford cwiþþ on dwolscipe, for þæt wæter cymþ of þē tō mē." Þā cwæþ se wulf þǣm lambe, "Hæfst þū nā scame nā ġebrēġdnesse mē tō cursienne?" And þæt lamb sæġde, "Min hlāford mōte meċ lā lǣtan." And se wulf edcwæþ, "hit nis nā siex mōnþas ġēo þæt þīn fæder ilċe mē dyde." And þæt lamb andswarode, "Ġiet næs iċ nā tīde ġeboren."
