Swā Cocc tīde his lǣswe on dunghylle sōhte, swā onfand hē earcnanstān, hwǣm se Cocc seġd, "Lā þū eart fæġerne dēorne stān hēr on fūle. And ġif hē þone þē þyrstþ þeċ onfindan sceolde, swā swā iċ dyde, þā sceolde hē þeċ ūp fōn and þeċ on þīn forman stede sette. Ac on oll hæfþ iċ þeċ onfand, for nā þinge hæbbe iċ mid þē tō dōnne, nā gōdnes iċ þē mæġ dōn, nā þū tō mē."
And þis tale seġde Æsope him þǣm þisne boċ rǣden ; for be þȳ cocce onġiete hē þone sott þone nā ġlēawnesse nā wīsdōme ne rǣċeþ, swā swā se Cocc be þȳ earcnanstāne ne rǣċeþ and ne seteþ. And be þȳ stāne is hē þisne fæġerne frofreliċne bōc tō onġietenne.
